The IOC Refugee Olympic Team Tokyo 2020, consisting of 29 athletes from across the world, represented resilience, unity, and hope on the global stage.

As part of this historic initiative, Kreative Vault was tasked with capturing documentary stills of the Kakuma Running Team in Kenya, alongside their Chef de Mission, Tegla Loroupe, a legendary marathon champion and humanitarian. Our role extended beyond photography: we documented their journey, their emotions, and the powerful human stories that connected them to the Games.

Challenges

The project unfolded during the COVID-19 pandemic, which introduced strict health protocols, travel restrictions, and limited physical access. Beyond shooting portraits and training moments, we also had to stream the live athlete announcement—an event where selected athletes were revealed remotely due to COVID restrictions.

Our responsibility was to capture both the livestream experience and the raw reactions of the athletes in Kakuma as they heard the news in real time. Balancing livestream production, documentary stills, and safety requirements demanded agility, technical precision, and a deep sensitivity to the athletes’ stories.

We applied a documentary-driven creative approach, combining still photography with behind-the-scenes storytelling to highlight both the intensity of training and the intimacy of human reaction. Using natural light, contextual framing, and candid shooting techniques, we captured moments that reflected resilience, pride, and hope.

Our team also ensured the livestream announcement was seamlessly integrated into the coverage, documenting athletes’ live reactions as part of the broader narrative. The final visuals were distributed by the International Olympic Committee, featured on global press and social media channels, and showcased on the official IOC Refugee Olympic Team Tokyo 2020 platform. These assets not only elevated awareness of the Refugee Olympic Team but also reinforced the IOC’s mission to use sport as a driver of unity and inspiration.
