Documentary Photography for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team Tokyo 2020

The IOC Refugee Olympic Team Tokyo 2020 was one of the most significant humanitarian sports initiatives in Olympic history 29 athletes from across the world, united not by nationality but by resilience, competing on the world's biggest stage. Kreative Vault was commissioned to serve as the visual documentation team for the Kakuma Running Team in Kenya, the group of refugee athletes training in Kakuma Refugee Camp under the guidance of Chef de Mission Tegla Loroupe a Kenyan marathon legend and one of the most respected humanitarian voices in sport. Our role extended well beyond standard sports photography. We were responsible for capturing documentary stills of the athletes' training and personal stories, producing editorial portraits, and managing the live broadcast of the official athlete selection announcement an event that, due to COVID-19 restrictions, had to be streamed remotely rather than held in person.

Challenges

Delivering High-Stakes Visual Coverage During a Global Pandemic

Every dimension of this project was shaped by the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Strict health protocols restricted physical access to the training environment, limited the size of our crew on the ground, and changed the nature of the announcement event entirely. What would normally have been a live, in-person reveal became a remote livestream which we were responsible for producing and integrating into our documentary coverage simultaneously. The technical demands were significant: managing a reliable livestream from a remote location in Kenya while concurrently capturing the raw, unscripted reactions of athletes hearing their names called for the first time. These were moments of genuine emotion joy, disbelief, tears and they could not be re-staged. We had one opportunity to get it right. Beyond the logistics, the creative responsibility was immense. The athletes in Kakuma had stories that the world deserved to hear told with dignity and depth. The photography could not reduce them to symbols of suffering. It had to show them as what they were: elite athletes, competitors, human beings with names and dreams and the full weight of their journeys present in their faces

Results

Global Distribution by the International Olympic Committee

We applied a documentary-driven approach throughout combining natural light portraiture, training action shots, and the kind of candid, unguarded moments that only come when a photographer has earned genuine trust with their subjects. The livestream coverage was produced and integrated seamlessly into the broader documentation, capturing the athletes' real-time reactions as a historic chapter of their lives was announced live. The final image library was distributed directly by the International Olympic Committee, appearing across global press channels, social media platforms, and the official IOC Refugee Olympic Team Tokyo 2020 digital platform. The work reinforced the IOC's mission to use sport as a vehicle for unity, hope, and human dignity and stands as one of the most personally significant and internationally visible commissions in Kreative Vault's portfolio. It demonstrates our capacity to operate as a photography partner at the highest level of international sport and humanitarian storytelling not just technically, but with the sensitivity and craft that work of this weight demands.
