Building a Brand Identity for Africa's Leading EdTech Platform
Soma Afrika set out to become the definitive guide to schools across Africa, starting with Kenya. But before the platform could earn the trust of parents and schools, it needed a brand identity strong enough to carry that ambition. A brand competing in the education space cannot afford to look like a startup it needs to communicate authority, reliability, and care in a single glance. That was the brief Kreative Vault received. Within a month, we had to research the EdTech landscape in Africa, understand what parents and institutions expect from a brand in this space, and deliver a complete visual identity system built to last.

Soma Afrika set out to become the definitive guide to schools across Africa, starting with Kenya. But before the platform could earn the trust of parents and schools, it needed a brand identity strong enough to carry that ambition. A brand competing in the education space cannot afford to look like a startup it needs to communicate authority, reliability, and care in a single glance. That was the brief Kreative Vault received. Within a month, we had to research the EdTech landscape in Africa, understand what parents and institutions expect from a brand in this space, and deliver a complete visual identity system built to last.

Challenges
Representing Education Without Falling Back on Clichés
The brief sounds simple until you try to execute it: create a brand that communicates education, trust, and approachability without resorting to the tired visual language that saturates the education sector. Graduation caps, open books, and generic blue colour schemes were all off the table. Soma Afrika needed to feel modern and distinctly African, not like a rebranded Western EdTech template. At the same time, the identity had to carry real authority. Parents searching for schools for their children are making one of the most important decisions of their lives. The brand needed to feel credible enough to be trusted with that decision. Equally, it had to feel warm and accessible not intimidating. Achieving all three simultaneously fresh, authoritative, and approachable in a single cohesive visual system, across digital and physical applications, in a brief timeline, was the central creative challenge

Results
A Visual Identity That Leads the African EdTech Space
We began with deep sector research, auditing how schools and education platforms across Kenya and the wider continent present themselves, and identifying the whitespace where Soma Afrika could own a distinct visual territory. From that research, we developed a bold logo system anchored in vibrant colour and confident modern typography communicating energy and expertise rather than the passive institutional feel common in the sector. The centrepiece of the identity is the abstract secondary mark: a geometric icon inspired by the form of stacked books, abstracted enough to feel contemporary and versatile, meaningful enough to communicate purpose at a glance. This icon functions independently of the wordmark — working at small scale on app icons and favicons, at large scale on signage and merchandise, and at every point in between. The result is a brand identity that positions Soma Afrika as the authority in African school discovery distinctive, scalable, and built for a platform that is already expanding beyond Kenya into new markets across the continent
